Walking the Camino Português? Rest in Gerês Before or After Your Walk
The Camino Português is one of the most loved routes to Santiago de Compostela. The central route from Porto runs about 240 km and usually takes 10 to 14 days on foot. That is a lot of kilometres on your legs, and a lot of shared rooms and early starts.
More and more walkers now add a few quiet days to either end of the walk. Some do it to arrive slowly before setting off. Others want to recover properly after reaching Santiago. Peneda-Gerês, Portugal's only national park, is one of the best places in the north to do both.
Before your Camino: arrive slowly
Gerês Paradise is in Louredo, Vieira do Minho, about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Porto airport and about 40 minutes from Braga. Spending two or three nights here before you start gives you time to:
- Get over the flight and adjust to Portuguese time
- Break in your boots on gentle trails, such as a stretch of the old Roman road, the Geira
- Sort your pack, rest well and eat well before the first long day
After your Camino: rest and recover
Santiago de Compostela is roughly a two-hour drive from Gerês, so it is easy to head back into Portugal after the walk. A few nights of real rest make a big difference:
- Soak tired legs in the heated jacuzzi, or swim in the infinity pool with views over the mountains
- Visit the thermal waters and natural pools of the national park
- Take short, easy walks to waterfalls instead of another 25 km day
- Sleep in a private room, in a quiet house that is yours alone
Why a private villa works well for walking groups
Many pilgrims walk with friends or family, and a private villa keeps the group together after weeks of separate beds. Each of our two villas has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and sleeps up to 10. That makes them a good fit for walking groups, families, and couples travelling together.
Both villas have central heating, fibre internet for sharing your photos, and private parking. Gerês Paradise is licensed local accommodation (AL 163176/AL).
Planning tips
- Book the rest days first. Rest stays at either end of the Camino book up quickly in spring and early autumn, the busiest walking seasons.
- Allow at least two nights. One night is a transfer; two or three nights are a rest.
- Hire a car or book a transfer. Public transport into the park is limited, and a car lets you reach the waterfalls and viewpoints easily.
